Vote tripling is an easy way to engage supporters and increase turnout on Election Day. There are two core components: first, asking supporters to commit to reminding three friends to vote, and second, shortly before Election Day, sending a follow-up message to each supporter who pledged.
Alternatively, admins can ask their supporters to recruit vote triplers, which has the potential to increase impact even more.
Go to the Actions Overview to see the steps to set up the basic information for these Actions.
Step One: Ask Supporters to Pledge
Create an Assign a Task action and ask supporters to pledge to remind three friends to vote before Election Day. Supporters will be able to pledge by clicking the button in their feed.
Step Two: Reminding 3 Friends
Load in a target list/voter file.
Create an Email, Text, or Share with Friends action with voter file matching enabled. In the description, ask supporters to contact three friends and remind them to vote.
Admins can filter their supporters so this action is only visible to supporters who pledged to remind three friends to vote. To do so, go to your Supporters page, click the 'Filter by' dropdown menu, select 'Action: Name,' and choose the action that asked people to pledge.
Note: For supporters to email or text their friends, they will need to import contacts to OutreachCircle. They are able to use share to an app if they wish to skip importing contacts.
Activate or schedule an activation time close to Election Day.
Asking Supporters to Recruit Vote Triplers
This workflow also has two components. Both steps can be accomplished using either an Assign a Task action or an Email, Text, or Share with Friends action. See above for details on how to create these actions.
In the first step, admins ask supporters to recruit a certain number of their friends to be vote triplers, providing a script for supporters to use if desired.
In the second step, admins send out a reminder to the supporters to remind their friends to vote triple.
Advanced Options
OutreachCircle has two possible ways to add to the basic vote tripling workflow on paid plans: using a Supporter Forms action instead of an Assign a Task action, and using a Group for the Email, Text, or Share with Friends action.
Asking Supporters to Pledge with Supporter Forms
This option replaces Step One if you are asking your supporters to vote triple, but not if you are asking them to recruit vote triplers. Once you have completed these instructions, continue to Step Two.
Create a Supporter Forms action.
Ask supporters to pledge to remind three specific friends to vote before Election Day.
Build a form that asks for the names of the three friends each supporter is going to remind.
Email, Text, or Share with Friends with Groups
Admins can create a Group of supporters who have recruited vote triplers or pledged to vote triple and only send the second action to this Group.
If you want your Email, Text, or Share with Friends action to only be visible to the supporters who pledged, you can create a Group for those supporters.
First, follow the instructions for Step One.
Before creating your Email, Text, or Share with Friends action, create a Group.
Go to your Assign a Task/Supporter Forms action. On the right-hand side of the screen, there will be an icon of a hand next to a number (the number of supporters who have taken the action) and a button that says View. Click View to see the supporters who have taken the action.
Select all and click Assign to Group, then select the Group you created.
Follow the instructions for Step Two but do not activate yet.
Go to Groups and select the Group you created, then toggle to Actions, click Add Action, and select your Email, Text, or Share with Friends action. This means that only the supporters who pledged to remind three friends will see the new action.
Activate or schedule an activation time close to Election Day.
Using Search and Survey Actions for Vote Tripling
By using a Search and Survey Action, organizations can collect the contact information of people who pledge to triple their vote, making it easy to remind them close to Election Day.
Create a Search and Survey Action so your supporters can recruit vote triplers. Add the contacts to a list of vote triplers, so the organization can contact them directly to remind them about vote tripling.
In the survey, you can also include a question that asks for the first names of the people the vote tripler plans to remind.
This tactic was designed by VoteTripling.org, a PAC that designs and disseminates free relational voter turnout programs for progressive campaigns and GOTV organizations. For more information, visit Votetripling.org or email contact@votetripling.org.
